The City of Turku and the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) are co-organising this year’s Annual EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) Forum in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. The 11th Annual Forum focuses on sustainability and innovation in the Baltic Sea Region in the next decade and expects to gather around 800 international policy-makers, political and economic experts to Turku’s creative business centre Logomo – one of Finland’s most prominent event venues.
The organisers’ aim is to make this year’s Forum a hub for productive multidisciplinary collaboration, ensuring that experts from the Baltic Sea Region come away not only full of new ideas, but with new collaboration partners and concrete, practical solutions ready to be applied in their work.
The CBSS Director General Ambassador Maira Mora said about the opportunity to co-organise: “As a trusted partner to our Baltic Sea Region colleagues we are eager to be actively involved in the organisation of the Annual Forum again. Being close partners and supporters of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and having co-organised the 4th Annual Forum in 2013 we feel a special responsibility to deliver a truly inspiring event this year.”
What is the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region?
The European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is the first Macro-regional Strategy in Europe. The Strategy was approved by the European Council in 2009 following a communication from the European Commission.
The Strategy is an agreement between the Member States of the EU and the European Commission to strengthen cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in order to meet common challenges facing the region and to benefit from common opportunities.
“The Baltic Sea is vitally important to Finnish people and the Strategy has been an excellent tool to enhance regional cooperation in all fields. The Strategy is divided into three objectives representing the three key challenges of the Strategy: saving the sea, connecting the region and increasing prosperity. Each objective relates to a wide range of policies and has an impact on the other objectives,” says Finnish Ambassador for Baltic Sea Affairs Helena Tuuri.
More than 200 projects have been carried out within the framework of the Strategy, delivering concrete results for a clean Baltic Sea, tackling climate change, promoting green energy, sustainable transport, and health and well-being, making Baltic Sea region an attractive place to live and work.
