“The Baltic states share common values and infrastructure, and we have a good opportunity to become a trailblazer in Europe in the field of digital as well as clean energy,” said Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid at today’s meeting between the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in Riga.
”Digital, energy, security and climate neutrality are all interrelated. The northern Baltic region has the potential to be one of the most digitally advanced regions in the world, yet for that, we will have to unite our strengths. “In addition, it is important to engage in close cooperation among both the Baltics and Nordics to achieve climate neutrality, so that the same rules apply on all common electricity markets,“ the Estonian head of state added.
In speaking on European security, President Kaljulaid stressed that Estonia saw no reason to ease sanctions on Russia before it complies with the Minsk Agreements. “At the same time, we support the European aspirations of our Eastern Partners and further enlargement of the EU,“ Kaljulaid said.
At today’s meeting, Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Latvian President Egils Levits and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also devoted lengthier discussion to implementation of joint infrastructure projects, regional security, the future of the European Union, the Eastern Partnership, and the Three Seas Initiative, the next summit of which will be hosted by Tallinn in June 2020.
At the Headquarters of NATO’s Multinational Division North in Ādaži, President Kaljulaid met the division’s commander Major General Flemming Mathiasen and the Estonian contingent stationed there under the command of Colonel Aron Kalmus. “From the military standpoint, the Baltic states are seen by both allies and adversaries as an integral space, and thus close cooperation between Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia is vital. The NATO’s HQ MND N is a good example of how we can work together to ensure our security,” said Kaljulaid in Ādaži. Headquarters Multinational Division North was established last year in cooperation with Denmark and its main function is to lead military operations in Latvia and Estonia in the event of a crisis or in wartime.
